Stronger Together – Weaker Apart: The Twitter Stream #stwa

ChristianResourcesTogether

ChristianResourcesTogether

Were you there? Was it worthwhile? Can we work together to ensure that this trade of ours has a viable future?

Certainly the feedback I’ve received so far has been positive, and the twitter stream emerging during the day looked hopeful: copied below. Now we watch and wait for the official lowdown; but in the meantime I find myself wondering why — with all the resources of CRE available — there was no official twitter stream, no blog, not even a facebook page to keep the vast majority of us who couldn’t attend informed.

Even now the official christianresourcestogether.co.uk website seems to be nothing more than a barebones holding page and I find myself, like SuperSimbo, wanting to shout “Wake up!” — social media are here to stay and if the UK trade fails to embrace them then we will go the way of the dinosaurs. Steve Mitchell’s final tweets on the day are particularly telling:

So #stwa is over, good sense of wanting to work together from all parts of the trade, nice to see people, who were kind to us ex STL folk. However I did get the sense that some are hanging on to the old world of traditional bookselling. They are in my prayers.

Returns and Credits: A joint response from STL Distribution and the Quartz Partnership

THANK YOU to STL Distribution and the Quartz Partnership for the following response to this morning’s Call to Retailers for Urgent Action over STL Credits and Returns:

Returns and Credits
Following the acquisition of STL Distribution by John Ritchie, we have been working hard with both the Administrator Baker Tilly and with The Quartz Partnership who have been retained to collect payments due to IBS-STL UK in administration, to resolve a number of scenarios with respect to returns and credits. There is a level of complexity involved due to the combinations of wholesale and distribution product but the following should cover most scenarios:

Damages and Shortages
As a gesture of goodwill we have credited claims made for damages and shortages on invoices dated up to and including 18th December 2009 as per our terms and conditions (see below for the full details under claims). As we recognise there has been some disruption due to both the Christmas break and recent weather conditions, we will look favourably where possible on any delayed claims.

Promotional Recalls
Crown Christmas and Engage Oct-Dec 2009 – we are actively working with all parties to agree a way forward and hope to have a solution in place by the middle of the week. In the meantime stores have been asked to complete recall forms in the normal manner.

See-Safe Returns
There are a number of Publisher specific see-safe agreements in place and in many cases we now have confirmation to proceed. Please contact our customer services on 0800 28 27 28 for specific details.

The STL Blog Team in conjunction with Baker Tilly and the Quartz Partnership.

STLD Distribution Terms & Conditions

6. CLAIMS
Claims for any damages or shortages must be notified to the Carriers and the Consignors within three days of the receipt of Goods, with a copy sent to the Company within the same period. Written notice of claims for non-delivery must be given to the Company within 14 days of the invoice date or in the case of non- delivery of invoice within 21 days of the date of the original order. On no account will claims be considered if notified outside this period. Title pages or authorised returns of stock for credit/replacement must be received back at STL within 30 days of the notice of damage or loss being given.

Call to Retailers for Urgent Action over STL Credits and Returns

Updated 11/01/2010, 3.30pm: STL Distribution and the Quartz Partnership have issued the following response to this post:

Christian Booksellers and Retailers need to take urgent action over credits and returns, according to Stuart Arnold of Cardiff Christian Bookshop, if they wish to avoid losing out in the wake of IBS-STL’s collapse here in the UK.

Wesley Owen: Beginning of the End as Nottingham Branch Ceases Trading

Update, 08/01/2010, 9.55pm: Wesley Owen Sutton has just notified members of its facebook group that tomorrow, Saturday 9th Jan, will be the shop’s last day of trading.

Whilst some branches of Wesley Owen are still fighting to survive and raising support, news has emerged tonight of the Nottingham branch finally closing its doors.

A report posted this evening on thisisnottingham.co.uk notes that shop staff were only notified of the closure yesterday:

“We’re all shell-shocked,” said Sue Barrett, branch manager of the Castle Gate shop. “We knew it was going to happen. It’s just quicker than we expected. We are devastated.

“My biggest sadness is that there will no longer be a Christian bookshop in Nottingham.”

Previously trading as the Congregational Federation’s Castle Gate Bookshop, the Nottingham branch was one of Wesley Owen’s most recent acquisitions and its handover to Wesley Owen was expected to secure the future for both organisations:

Nottingham is a vibrant shopping centre with a strong history of Christian retailing, the lease on Wesley Owen’s existing store came to an end in January 08, and discussions were held between Wesley Owen and ourselves to explore the benefits of combining the 2 stores. The Castle Gate bookshop is superbly located, being just 50 metres from a main High St, and it quickly became obvious that a Wesley Owen store in the Castle Gate location would provide a great resource for the city and the Congregational Federation, and would give a secure foundation for the future for both retail ministries.

Supporters pledge £23,000 to help save Wesley Owen, South Woodford

Wesley Owen South Woodford: £23,000 pledged in support

Church members in and around South Woodford have pledged £23,000 — almost a quarter of the estimated £100,000 needed — to help save their local branch of Wesley Owen. The story emerged on Tuesday this week on the Save Wesley Owen facebook page in response to the question,

Just how do you find if there are sufficient Christians in an area who would invest in a Christian bookshop? How do you ask?

The answer came back from Moira Clarke-Moisley who replied:

well we told one of the vicars on our church partnership scheme and he addressed his church the sunday after and said that if 100 people pledged £1000 then we could stay in buisness. The Monday after someone phoned us up to pledge thier £1000, so from there we phoned round all the churches we could and told anybody and everybody we could we now have pledges ranging from £2000 to £10 I think at the moment the total is £12000. So if anybody would like to pledge to keep the south woodford store going then please give us a call – 02085304244 and if you can’t afford to pledge everyone can afford to pray.

and followed up shortly afterwards with:

quick update our running total is now at £23,000 so only another £77,000 by tommorow lunch time to go.

Please make a note of that number, 020 8530 4244, spread the word and, if you’d like to make a pledge, give them a call.

In the meantime, the Edinburgh branch — which first broke the news on facebook that the company was going into administration — have launched an in-store and online petition in a bid to convince prospective investors that there is sufficient interest to warrant supporting the shop. At the time of writing the online petition has 20 signatories.

If you live in or around Edinburgh and see the shop as an important resource to the local community, please call in and sign it; and if you can’t get there in person, please consider signing the online petition.

Stronger Together – Weaker Apart

ChristianResourcesTogether

ChristianResourcesTogether

Stronger Together – Weaker Apart is, as most readers are no doubt aware, the theme of next week’s consultation and presentation day being brought to us by CRE in association with the BA Christian Booksellers Group (BACBG), the PA Christian Suppliers Group and Christian Marketplace magazine: more details in the What’s On section and in the January 2010 edition of Christian Marketplace, p.26. If you’ve visited cbcltd.co.uk recently you’ll have noticed that it now redirects to christianresourcestogether.co.uk, offering us a tantalising glimpse of what one of the day’s announcements may unveil…

There’s a certain irony in the title now, sadly, because all the supposed strength of Biblica proved insufficient to hold the STL empire together last year: we enter 2010 weakened as a trade with 26 branches of Wesley Owen left out in the cold and the rest of the company parcelled out between CLC, John Ritchie Ltd, Kingsway and Koorong. Bigger, it seems, is not always better — but connected surely is, and hopefully as a network of independents and smaller chains we can find our way through the present crisis.

If you plan to be there, you have until Thursday 7th Jan to contact Mandy Briars at CRE (scroll down the page when you get there) and confirm your attendance. If, like me, you are unable to attend, then perhaps you can set aside some time during the day to pray for those who are there?

Wesley Owen and CLC: Looking to the future…

Wesley Owen

At this stage we still have no clear information about the future of the abandoned branches of Wesley Owen beyond the administrators’ statements issued before Christmas that they intend to continue trading “for the foreseeable future”:

Cash told The Bookseller the remaining stores would “continue to trade for the foreseeable future.” He added: “I am hoping that there will be a solution for the majority of the 26 stores… there is a healthy degree of interest.”

However, a resolution is not expected until the second week of January at the earliest. Cash explained: “While 14 of the retail outlets are now being operated by CLC and Koorong, we are keen to explore interest in the remaining 26 stores with a view to securing a future in the medium to long term. Each of the stores are currently continuing to trade under our control.”

Wesley Owen Link

Wesley Owen Link

In an attempt to make it easier to keep track of any developments or concerns on a branch by branch basis, I have now set up a dedicated Wesley Owen section on this blog — with separate pages for each branch being added over the next few days — where comments, prayer requests and other information may be posted. You’ll find the link in the navigation bar, top-right on every page, between “Updates” and “What’s On” as shown in the screenshot here. Please feel free to take advantage of these pages, and encourage the staff at the branches to look in and post their own messages if they so wish.

CLC

Good news has emerged about those working at the branches taken on by CLC: thank you to Phil Burnham, CLC’s UK Director, who left the following comment on New Year’s Day, confirming that CLC UK has amended its constitution to allow it to employ people and that the Wesley Owen staff have been taken on under TUPE regulations:

Hello and a very blessed New Year to one and all. I came across this Blogsite a couple of weeks ago and it’s been an interesting read.

Yes, CLC is still out there and is very much alive. Booksellers need to know that we are in a position to help them with their supply chain difficulties. Indeed, many have already contacted us and are now enjoying the benefits. Among other things, we offer same day despatch, competitive terms and good service. To open a trade account, email accounts.received AT clcwholesaleuk.com for further information.

To reply to a point raised by Phil Groom on Dec.19 re CLC’s staffing policy in taking over six WO shops, yes, there has been a change. In fact a big change. It just so happens that one of the amendments to our Constitution this past spring was to enable employment… Hmmmm, did the Lord know something at the time that we did not?

Phil was right in his observation when he wrote that CLC UK does/did not employ its staff. This means we can keep more bookshops open on the high street, and we can support international literature initiatives. Re UK volunteer workers, while CLC can cover some costs, other support comes from…. wherever the Lord provides. Some of our shop closures in recent years have been due to the lack of personnel. Since fulltime recruits were still being noticed by their absence, provision was made within constitutional changes to be able to employ people just in case, while at the same time we have continued recruiting along traditional lines, ie via part-funded volunteers. Little did we know what was over the rise in the road.

We have been greatly saddened in recent years to see so many other shops closing down and we have felt powerless to step in when asked at various times if we could do something. But with the trickle suddenly becoming a torrent we saw the need to act. While respecting our traditions and our values, we simply could not sit back any longer and watch yet more Christian bookshops close down because CLC doesn’t pay its workers. CLC has ministries in 56 other countries and was an employer everywhere else except in the UK. Even CLC USA have some employees. Like our colleagues over the pond we now have a hybrid system comprising both supported and paid staff. We have always been just as missionary minded and sacrificial in our outlook in those nations where salaries are paid as we are here in the UK in order that our purpose statement can be fulfilled. In short, CLC is now an employer in the UK too by taking over shops that have employees in them. TUPE regulations prevail in this sort of scenario. There is no alternative.

CLC UK has taken a huge step in all this. And though it is one that raises a whole load of issues for CLC as a mission, for our individual members, and even perhaps for some of our supporters, the leadership have taken it in full confidence and assurance of faith that it is the right thing to do before God and His Church at this time.
By the way, we still need those full time volunteers previously alluded to for a number of existing roles. And yes, they will need some personal financial and spiritual support……..
