10 Years of  The Good Bookstall: Celebrations at CRE

MY PERSONAL THANKS AND CONGRATULATIONS to Mary Bartholomew and the rest of the team at The Good Bookstall for their generous hospitality at CRE last week: it was an honour and a privilege to be able to share in their 10th anniversary celebrations, as well as to meet so many other friends and colleagues from the trade during the course of the day.

Bob Hartman Story in New World Record Storytelling Attempt

The Lion Storyteller Bedtime Book

The Lion Storyteller Bedtime Book

DO YOU ENJOY STORYTELLING? Then make your way to the Peace in the Park Festival at The Ponderosa in Sheffield on 4th June where Self Help Africa are planning to set a new world record for the most adults reading aloud to children at a single location. The chosen story, Tortoise Brings Food, is an African tale retold by Bob Hartman in the The Lion Storyteller Bedtime Book.

Bob says:

I’ve been telling stories professionally for over twenty years, and I am always amazed by the power of a story well told to capture and entertain and delight. Sharing stories with children is an opportunity to cement a relationship and shape a life. I’m so pleased to be involved in a project that encourages parents to read to their children, and at the same time, contributes to the needs of parents and children in Africa. Let’s break the record and make a change in the world!

Storytelling starts at 3pm, with Guinness World Records adjudicators present. More details and a pdf practice sheet of the story available from Lion Hudson: Lion Children’s Books in world record storytelling attempt!

Living Oasis Edinburgh Still Trading Closing Down (Updated 7.45pm, 20/05/2011)

Living Oasis Store Finder from CRE 2011

Living Oasis Store Finder CRE 2011

DESPITE AN APPARENT GOOF-UP by the company’s publicity department, which somehow omitted the Edinburgh branch from flyers (pictured) and School Catalogues given out to punters at CRE last week, I’m reliably informed that Living Oasis Edinburgh, the company’s sole-surviving store north of the border, is still in business.

UPDATE 7.45pm, 20/05/2011: In an announcement posted on facebook this evening, Living Oasis Edinburgh have indicated that they will cease trading on 4th June 2011.

Elsewhere, unfortunately, things are also looking less than hunky-dory with still no news of opening dates for the all-new bright-and-shiny Leeds and Liverpool stores. Independent sources indicate that a number of suppliers have learnt the hard way and, fingers burnt by non-payment of bills, have had to withdraw credit facilities, leaving staff in some shops struggling to meet customer requests: please continue to pray for everyone caught up in what seems to be a crippling downhill spiral.

To end on a more positive note, however, the company did manage to put on an impressive stand at CRE offering free coffee for anyone spending £5 or over: congratulations to all concerned.

New MD for Alban Books

WENDY RIMMINGTON, who was appointed as MD for Alban Books in November last year, has moved on, making way for new MD Jonny Gallant, formerly of Saint Andrew Press. Commenting on his appointment in a brief press release (pdf, 41kb), Jonny said:

Alban Books is a very exciting company, working with a terrific range of US publishers and I’m really looking forward to putting my sales and marketing background to use in facing the opportunities and challenges ahead.

I’ve invited Jonny to contribute a guest post to tell us more: watch this space…

Norwich Christian Resource Centre Enters Nominations for Telegraph Book Club Tour

CONGRATULATIONS to Norwich Christian Resource Centre, one of several Christian bookshops that have entered nominations for the Daily Telegraph/National Book Tokens Book Club Tour. In the section explaining why the shop should be chosen to host a Book Club Tour event, they say:

We hold book signings and author discussion evenings on a monthly basis usually complimented by a two course meal with wine/coffee in our 44 seater cafe.

The events are not always faith based and we have local historian and author Neil Storey talking about the history of Norwich in September.

Sadly we were just unable to attract PD James last Christmas as she felt she was now too old to travel. A monthly book club has met for the past 11 years reading authors as diverse as Delia Smith to Kate Atkinson. I would ideally like to attract Sally Vickers.

Other Christian bookshops nominated include:

Nominations are still open: head on over there today if you’d like to submit your own nomination

Wildcard: Sainsbury’s Wins Bookseller of the Year Award

LAST BUT NOT LEAST: Congratulations to Sainsbury’s on winning The Bookseller‘s “Martina Cole General or Chain Bookselling Company of the Year Award”:

Sainsbury’s was honoured with the Martina Cole General or Chain Bookselling Company of the Year Award after reinvigorating book zones, increasing book sales by more than 33% and attracting new book buyers to the market. One judge said: “We should celebrate the fact that they are embracing books and offering people an alternative place to buy—somewhere they can spend time browsing as well as buying.”

Full story: Quercus publisher of the year at The Bookseller Industry Awards

Whether or not Sainsbury’s genuinely qualifies as a bookseller is a hotly contested issue in the report’s comments section: well worth reading. From my point of view there’s a certain irony here: having moved to Sainsbury’s following LST’s redundancy proceedings last year, I now find myself working for the nation’s leading bookseller — and I haven’t had to restock a single book in my entire time there…

STL UK: VAT increase – January 4th 2011

STL UK: VAT increase – January 4th 2011

STL UK HAVE ANNOUNCED that following consultations with their suppliers, “in the main” they will be absorbing January’s VAT increase by adjusting ex-VAT prices to keep VAT-inclusive prices for end consumers the same. Vatable items such as CDs, for instance, currently retailing at £14.99 will continue to retail at £14.99 by means of a behind-the-scenes adjustment resetting the ex-VAT price to £12.49:

  • Current: ex-VAT price £12.76 + 17.5% VAT = £14.99
  • After 4th Jan 2011: ex-VAT price £12.49 + 20% VAT = £14.99

To make the adjustment on their own systems, STL’s computers will be temporarily taken down on New Year’s Day and customers are advised against placing online orders “from 4pm on 31st December until 9am on 3rd of January.” Any queries should be addressed to STL’s Customer Services department.

Printed books, of course, remain zero-rated for VAT. Retailers will still need to make the appropriate adjustments in their own accounting and VAT returns to HM Revenues & Customs.

CONGRATULATIONS to Letchworth Christian Bookshop on winning STL’s Golden Ticket for October. Shop staff commented,

We were just so surprised and blessed to find the golden ticket! We have so few orders over the qualifying limit that we had not expected to be in the running. Thank you STL for this encouragement at a time when we really needed it. Everyone is eager to see how we will use this grace gift to the shop.

Press Release from John Ritchie Ltd, 14/10/10: Carlisle Consolidation (pdf, 1.7mb)

Press Release from John Ritchie Ltd, 14/10/10: Carlisle Consolidation (pdf, 1.7mb)

IN A PRESS RELEASE issued this afternoon, John Ritchie Ltd have announced the consolidation of their UK trade operations under one roof at STL Carlisle.

It’s a decision that undoubtedly demonstrates a renewed trade confidence in the company as they have fought to recover from last year’s turmoil under their former owners, Biblica, and reflects well upon all involved in running STL’s distribution and wholesale services this year: congratulations to everyone concerned.

Consolidation of most stock at STL is expected to be completed by mid-October, leaving the Kilmarnock site dedicated to developing the company’s publishing and retail services. Ritchie trade partners who do not have STL accounts will be contacted separately with further information.

Full Press Release:

JOHN RITCHIE LTD – TRADE ANNOUNCEMENT

The past 12 months have been a period of significant growth for the Kilmarnock based company, John Ritchie Limited. As part of its ongoing business development, it acquired Penfold Card & Gift in Bicester, Eikon Bible Art and most recently the STL Distribution business in Carlisle at the start of 2010.

The priority over the first 6 months of this year was to stabilise the distribution business and carry out a strategic review of the new expanded organisation to determine its future direction.

After consultation with a small number of staff in Kilmarnock, John Ritchie Ltd is now proposing to further enhance its service to the UK Christian retail trade by integrating all Ritchie trade distribution operations into the Carlisle warehouse. This re-organisation will enable Ritchie to provide a consolidated ordering facility and more efficient supply of products to its trade customers. The existing Kilmarnock site will focus on developing its Publishing and Retailing functions.

Ken Munro, CEO of John Ritchie Ltd said: “I believe this re-organisation of activities is essential in order to improve efficiency and further enhance the excellent support for all our customers. John Ritchie Publishing enjoys an important heritage within Scotland and Northern Ireland and it is our intention to further support this core market through our retailing and publishing activities. STL Distribution offers unparalleled service levels to the UK Christian book trade. By bringing Ritchie’s stock range into Carlisle we will continue to strengthen and broaden the product range we bring to market.”

The majority of stock will be transferred to Carlisle by mid-October, at which point all order enquiries should be directed to STL Distribution. Further details will follow shortly for Ritchie trade accounts that do not have accounts with STL Distribution.

CONGRATULATIONS to Christian Book Centre, Preston, on becoming the first winner of STL’s Golden Ticket:

CBC Preston win the first Golden Ticket from STL

CBC Preston win the first Golden Ticket from STL

Nigel from CBC Preston said:

We were overwhelmed with the generous gift that the Gold Envelope represented for us as a business, we offer our sincere thanks and appreciation to STL for this gift.

It is great that we still sell many Bibles from both our shops, so we decided to use the gift to buy in Bibles. The gift of the Gold Award has allowed us to stock up with a broader range of Bibles that can be offered to our customers.

Further congratulations to the runners up:

If you’d like your store to be in with a winning chance, simply keep those orders rolling in to STL. The rules are simple: to be in with a chance for the Golden Ticket, worth £500, place an order for £250 or more; for the Silver Ticket, worth £300, place an order for £150 or more; and for the Bronze, worth £150, place an order for at least £75, the old carriage-free minimum.

Remember, all orders remain carriage-free until further notice from STL.

LESS THAN A YEAR after the UK Christian book trade was plunged into turmoil by Biblica’s decision to pull the plug on its UK operations, STL UK’s new owners, who picked up the pieces in Carlisle in the wake of Biblica’s pull out, have announced an exclusive UK trade representation and distribution deal with Biblica Europe for the forthcoming 7th edition of Operation World alongside an exclusive UK distribution agreement for Biblica US titles.

Although Biblica’s international leaders have yet to publicly acknowledge or show any signs of repentance for the damage they caused not only to the UK trade but, more importantly, to individual lives and livelihoods, this new trading relationship must surely be good news and a sign of hope as trust is slowly rebuilt in the trade: congratulations to all involved at STL UK on showing sufficient grace to broker this deal. May it open the door to a new era for the entire trade.

From the official press release, issued Friday 17 Sept 2010:

Press Release, 17 Sept 2010: STL Distribution to Distribute New Edition of Operation world to UK Trade

STL Distribution to Distribute New Edition of Operation world to UK Trade (pdf, 635kb)

STL Distribution to Distribute New Edition of Operation world to UK Trade

STL Distribution and Biblica Europe have signed a new agreement which will see STL Distribution acting as the exclusive sales representative and distributor to the UK trade for the new edition of Operation World.

With over 1 million copies of past versions sold, this fully updated and revised 7th edition is the must-have definite [sic] guide to praying for the people and nations of the world. Featuring a daily prayer calendar, maps, political, economic and religious information on each county, along with answers to prayer, this eagerly anticipated resource will be published 15th October 2010.

Graham Sopp, Executive Director of Biblica Europe, said “Operation World is widely regarded as the definitive source of prayer information about every country in the world. Our hope is that Operation World will encourage many more Christians to pray for the nations of the world. We are very pleased to be working with STL Distribution on this project.”

Update 22/09/2010: More info now available from STL

STL Distribution: Golden Ticket

Have you got the Golden Ticket?

STL UK’S DECISION earlier this year to offer carriage-free delivery on all UK orders was a lifeline thrown at just the right time for us at the LST Bookshop: no more having to hold back until we reached that ever-elusive carriage-free minimum order value, we could simply process orders of any size at any time — and that’s precisely what we have been doing, much to the delight of our customers.

For STL themselves, of course, that decision has come at a price: smaller orders to process and shipping costs to absorb — yet rather than tighten things up, they’ve gone on to offer us better terms and better discounts, albeit on what seems to be an increasingly narrow range if the September/October bulletin is anything to go by.

And now, rather than revert to a carriage-free minimum, they’ve gone the extra mile with this Charlie and the Chocolate Factory inspired initiative of a Golden Ticket — two steps further, in fact, with Silver and Bronze tickets on offer as well. All we need do to qualify for entry is place bigger orders: to be in with a chance for the Golden Ticket, worth £500, place an order for £250 or more; for the Silver Ticket, worth £300, place an order for £150 or more; and for the Bronze, worth £150, place an order for at least £75, the old carriage-free minimum.

So before you press send on that small order, pause for a moment and think: what would you do with a bonus order worth up to £500? Would another couple of items take your order up to the next level? Might it be worth waiting until a little closer to the deadline in case there’s something else to add?

STL, I salute you: thank you.

Back in January, John Gaines asked:

I presume that Woking as a franchise will be able to go back to being an Indie. But what is happening to the Crown Retailers? Does anyone know if that scheme will continue?

The good news is that Woking’s former Wesley Owen franchise has indeed rebranded as an indie— Origin Christian Books & Media — and if their facebook and twitter presence are anything to go by, they seem to be doing well (although a few more twitter followers might encourage them).

Crown Books Now Closed

Crown Books Now Closed

As far as I’m aware, however, nothing more has been stated publicly about the Crown Books partnership: it seems to have been allowed to quietly fade away. If you go there today all you’ll find is a simple holding page with a message to say that orders placed before the end of May will be fulfilled subject to stock availability: otherwise it’s a case of watch this space and — commendably — a note saying “To purchase Christian products, please visit your local Christian retailer.”

Update, Aug 11, 2010:
My thanks to STL for following up on my suggestion for a pointer to UKCBD: much appreciated.

Even better, if I may offer a suggestion, a link to the UK Christian Bookshops Directory might help those who don’t know where to find their local Christian retailer. Anyone wishing to link is very welcome to lift code for text links, buttons or banners from the UKCBD Link to Us page: please let me know if you do this — I’ll gladly reciprocate where appropriate.

So what happened the Crown Books scheme? After consultations with the scheme’s members, the new STL realised that it simply wasn’t working to the benefit of both parties: a new scheme was needed that all retailers could be a part of; and that scheme is the recently launched STL Distribution Retail Partner programme.

STL Retail Partnership Programme

STL Retail Partnership Programme (pdf, 766kb)

Most Christian retailers should have received full details of the new programme: if not, you can download the brochure here (pdf, 766kb). STL describe the programme as offering:

  • Consolidated ordering, supply (one order, one delivery, one invoice)
  • Broad Promotional Programme
  • Regular Stock Re-fresh
  • Preferential trading terms
  • Stock Management (Synergi)
  • Personnel support (From the STL Distribution team)

Personally I remain unconvinced by the “one order, one delivery, one invoice” mantra: desirable as that may be, given (for example) IVP’s reluctance to sign up to a wholesale agreement with STL and the ongoing limited availability of much product beyond the more pop-level evangelical range, it still feels a long way off for me at LST.

STL tell me they’ve had an encouraging response so far. How has it been for you? Have you joined? If not, why not? Whether you wish to comment here or offer feedback to STL privately, the more feedback we can give them, the better they can fine-tune the programme to ensure that it does meet our needs. The old has gone, the new has come and we are indeed Stronger Together, Weaker Apart. My personal thanks to the team at STL for all their efforts to work with us in our ministry.

I have a love-hate relationship with Amazon. I love the way they keep rising to every new challenge that the internet throws out — and, yes, like almost every other book lover on the planet, I love their low prices.

But I also hate what they’re doing to this trade of ours, drawing suppliers and customers alike down, down, down in ever decreasing circles: will the time come, I wonder, when, like a black hole sucking in everything in its orbit, the whole thing implodes? Not a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow but a singularity at the end of ecommerce? Or more prosaically, like used bathwater down the plughole to the ocean’s oblivion…

Amazon Offer: House Rules at Half Price

Amazon Offer - House Rules reduced from £7.99 to £4.99

This week, they sucked me in again: an irresistible offer of Jodi Picoult’s House Rules at half-price — except, as you can see from the screenshot, it wasn’t half the current £16.99 hardback price, it was almost half the forthcoming £7.99 paperback price. I clicked through… only to find — as you too will find if you succumb — the actual offer was £8.38, just under half the hardback price.

“What’s going on?” I asked them. “You’ve offered it to me for £4.99, but the online price is £8.38.”

Their first response came within 24 hours and was simply a stock reply as if mine were a generic stock enquiry, explaining that they sometimes run out of special offer items due to high levels of demand, yadda yadda yadda…

Being the awkward customer that I am, I contacted them again with a request to read and respond to my specific enquiry; and they did — again within 24 hours — with an apology and instructions on how to obtain the book at the emailed offer price. But then they went one better: rather than take off the difference, £3.39, they took off the £4.99, leaving me with only £3.39 to pay. That’s what I call customer service!!

As for what this has to do with us as booksellers and as Christian traders in particular: are not we the ones who should be setting the standards that other businesses aspire to? What, I find myself wondering, has gone so badly wrong with our trade — with, dare I say, the Church of which we are assuredly a part — that so often it’s the world that sets the standards that we must aspire to?

Our price £11.99 - RRP £14.99

Our price £11.99 - RRP £14.99

What has gone so badly wrong with a company like Kingsway — a company that excels in so many other ways, whose employees are all, as Melanie has rightly pointed out, “wonderful people … friendly, polite, considerate and try[ing] to do the best they can…” — that its leaders/marketers seem to regard comparing their own so-called RRPs to their own actual selling prices as a reasonable business practice? In the case of brand new albums, such as the Very Best of Kendrick album, the so-called RRPs are prices that have never been charged anywhere, let alone by themselves — with nothing even to suggest that this is an introductory price: it is, quite simply, Kingsway’s “Our price” v/s Kingsway’s RRP.

STL UK Customer Service Survey

STL say 'Tell Us What You Think!'

On a more hopeful note, however, the new STL seem determined not only to offer us the best possible customer service but have also invited us to help them work out exactly what standards they should be aspiring to. If you haven’t taken their Customer Service Survey, please do consider it. It will probably take a good half an hour or more to work through the 30 questions, but if enough of us do it and STL take our feedback on board, it will surely be time well spent.

A number of retailers have expressed concerns recently about general stock availability at STL UK and, more specifically, of VeggieTales:

No one seems to know what’s happening with them, no one seems to have any in stock and we’re losing sales as a result.

Kingsway have some titles listed but it seems to be a limited selection, and I’ve contacted Big Idea, the creators of VeggieTales, to see if they can shed any light on the situation. In the meantime, if you have excess stock or know of a UK distributor/wholesaler that has VeggieTales stock available — or have any other relevant information you’d care to share — please do tell…

On general stock availability at STL, my experience is that stock levels appear to be improving here and there but it’s very patchy: new title availability has been particularly sporadic. That said, however, I’ve found that in most cases they are keen to address the situation: if you encounter problems, please do let them know — and remember to keep an eye on the STL Blog and follow @STLDistribution on twitter for updates.

Whilst we’re talking STL, how helpful are you finding their daily/weekly specials? I personally find the offers more frustrating than helpful: I’d rather have consistently better terms across their entire range than lots of one-off limited-period extra-discount deals, which to me seem more suited to a retail than to a wholesale operation. But perhaps that’s just me…
