OVER THE LAST FEW DAYS a number of leading Christian publishers have switched distribution channels in what Brian Wilson, IVP’s Chief Executive, has described as “a totally unprecedented scale and speed of change, the like of which I have never witnessed in my 20 years in this trade.”

Those that have come to my attention so far are:

As of the original date of this post, 11/3/2014, no clarification of the situation had been issued by TMD. They had, however, given notice as follows to Steve Legg, editor/publisher of Sorted magazine and a range of related products:

Our Directors have been reviewing our distribution policy and we will no longer be supporting the distribution of self-published product and therefore we will be arranging to send product back to you over the coming days.

During the following week (19/3/2014) news emerged that the company had entered administration: Farewell to Carlisle’s Christian distribution service as TMD enters Administration.

Last but not least, Tearfund have announced that they are closing down their fairly traded gifts division, Created Gifts, originally known as Tearcraft: End of an Era for Created Gifts.

Notes

CLC Wholesale, IVP/Partnership Distribution and Joining the Dots have provided the following charts outlining their range of publishers:

1. CLC Wholesale

CLC Wholesale: Top UK Publishers, March 2014

CLC Wholesale: Top UK Publishers, March 2014

CLC Wholesale: Top US Publishers, March 2014

CLC Wholesale: Top US Publishers, March 2014

One important (in my opinion, because I love Fiona’s books) publisher that didn’t make CLC’s charts is Crafty Publishing: believe me, people, if you don’t stock Fiona’s Young David series, your children’s section has a major gap in it, and your younger customers — not to mention their parents — are missing out.

  1. Thanks Phil, for this summary – very helpful. As you say it’s all happened so quickly – if you blink you might have missed a change – so thanks again. we can always rely on you.

  2. Lifeway and many of the Tyndale titles are available from the CLC warehouse as we continue to wholesale across a wide range of publishers.

  5. In April US publisher Baker Publishing Group will consolidate all of their inventory at Macmillan instead of having it split between Marston mad Macmillan. Lion Hudson and SPCK will continue to sell and market these books. The publishing brands include Bethany House, Revell, Baker Books, Chosen, Brazos Press, Baker Academic and Gods Word Bibles. The distributors like CLC, Gardners and other similar accounts will continue to sell the titles that fit their customer base. Joining the Dots will continue to selectively choose titles that fit their mission to serve the Church. Inventory will be moving to Macmillan throughout April.
